LAFCo presents - "Sphere of Influence"
Free performance Friday, September 28st, 400 p.m.
City Hall (1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, Room 263)
A local cast featuring comedian and county supervisor Tom Ammiano
performs LAFCo's "Sphere of Influence." We are
transforming a City Hall hearing room into
a performance space for this *free* Friday afternoon performance,
featuring as a guest-star, Tom's board-of-supervisors colleague
Matt Gonzalez.
NOTE "Sphere of Influence" was always intended as an audience-participation
show. But we ask that people who are new to the show take some
time to understand the tone and mood of the production. Don't participate
as a heckling audience member a la "rocky horror" but try to
participate as a full-fledged cast member (even if you only take a bit part).
About LAFCo's "Sphere of Influence"
Imagine a government committee composed entirely of members of
other government bodies and appointed by yet more princes of bureaucracy
- meeting to decide the boundaries, duties and purposes of yet more
bureaus, departments and districts - and spending most of their time
trying to define the protocols of lobbyists who in turn are lobbying only
to try to stretch the boundaries of their allowable pleas for influence
over this defining process.
Is it some sort of Hell for bureaucrats, or is there a festival
of dance, rhythm and sacred ritual hidden behind the legal pads and coffee
mugs? In the heart of the seemingly purposeful drudgery of government is a
hidden spring of playful theater in which play is camouflaged in the
trappings of importance, and Emperor Norton bangs the gavel.
"Sphere of Influence" is a Kafkaesque parody of
bureaucratic drudgery - meticulously scripted but playfully improvisational. It
stubbornly refuses to draw the line between spectacle and spectator.
=====
About us LAFCo was founded in 1963 by director and playwrite
Cortese Knox, and has since been performing and publishing innovative plays
that straddle the boundaries between drama and reality, secular and sacred,
performer and audience.
